You ARE amazing and this really hit home for me. Thank you for sharing this and explaining the difference between modesty and humility . It was an aha moment for me β₯οΈ
I saw Chantelle comment on YouTube and I was glad she wrote it as I felt the same way she did. Your channel is inspiring, educational, and humorous with your beautiful personality. When you change your wording, your mindset starts to change. Thank you Erika for being you and showing people your growth which spreads to others, like myself. π₯°
I was glad to read Chantelle's comment because I felt the same way. I'm old and white so I took it as our patriarchy society and how women think of achievements and not "boasting". Brings to mind a comment my daughter's teacher said to her about not complementing ourselves. If we don't complement ourselves chances are no one will. Many of us are in awe of what you are doing. You are helping to change our society for the better one card at a time.
I've never taken your vibe in the way of modesty, so this gave me a lot to think about. I've always felt your community building and content are moreso "in the flow" of it, so you have natural feelings and expressions that come out. But when I read Chantelle's comment...wow. What a lesson. I am going to try to take it to heart as well!
But to answer your question...modesty is valued by women because of the patriarchy. If we are confident, growing, women, we are threatening to the men who aren't confident and growing. By inventing a societal value like this, they find a "natural" way to keep women down.
Keep questioning, keep growing. You and this community are amazing!
As a woman and/or BIPOC, historically it has been literally dangerous to stand out from the crowd. And the prouder and bolder one is, the more there are members of the power-group that want to put one back in one's place. So it seems a generationally-learned habit, perhaps, for what is "proper" (read: safe) behaviour. Maybe?
Thanks for pushing back in an elegant and thoughtful way. ππ»
As a brown woman who follows you on YT (I rarely miss a reading, even though I don't watch many of the Sunday conversations because of paucity of time), I'm so proud of Chantelle for speaking truth to power. I agree 100%. I often say "I am humbled," but I rarely say "Aww, this old things I'm wearing..." or "You're being too kind" to folks who pay me a compliment. You are brilliant and gifted and so worthy of having a tremendous following. And your YT channel is YOUR Today show, lol. Celebrate it, Erika <3
Thank you again for your beautiful powerful words! The explanation between modesty and humility was something I needed to understand. I come here as a white male to listen to your powerful words to understand areas in my life that I need to look at and reconstruct. You help me hold up a mirror and clean off smudges that were put there by those who would put down a powerful wordsmith such as yourself. I must see clearly the path ahead. The life you live and share through your words, give me hope that there is actually a future to weave. Thank you, Erika. You have an incredible gift. And we are blessed to receive it.

Beautiful -- and the cards were a perfect fit, eh?
I think at least a large part of the modesty thing is fear of being targeted as a "tall poppy". (For example, https://www.womenofinfluence.ca/2023/03/01/tps-press-release/)
